What should you do if you get a parking ticket?

If you get a parking ticket which you think has been unreasonably or incorrectly issued there are several things that you should and should not do. Once a ticket is issued it is impossible for the traffic warden or parking attendant to cancel it so it is counter productive to scream abuse at the individual upon being told that it cannot be cancelled.

KEEP CALM!

Ask why the ticket was issued and give your reasons why you think you were able to park where you did.
Ask that the warden/attendant makes a note of your comments in his/her pocket book. Collect as much evidence in support of your case as you can before leaving. It is a good idea to carry a disposable camera in the car so that you can make a record of missing or faded lines or misleading signs. (Disposable cameras are very cheap and also invaluable in the event of an accident to record the position of vehicles.)

Write to the issuing authority as soon as possible. Be firm but polite, present evidence of any shortcomings in the lines or signs, mitigating circumstances etc. Whether the ticket was issued by a local authority or a traffic warden there is an obligation to be both 'fair' and 'timely' in dealing with representations from aggrieved motorists. If they take months to reply and you respond 'by return' you will be in a strong position should decide to you pursue the matter in court or with an adjudication.

Remember that although the issuing authority can cancel a ticket on compassionate grounds, or if there are mitigating circumstances, an adjudicator will only quash a ticket if it has been incorrectly issued. For example if the signs were missing or incorrect, the wrong offence code was put in by the parking attendant, there was an error or discrepancy in the parking order, etc.
